3M Combat Arms Earplug Settlement: What You Need to Know
Thousands of U.S. military veterans and service members have finally seen a major breakthrough in their fight for justice. The long-standing legal battle against 3M Company over defective Combat Arms earplugs has reached a massive $6.01 billion settlement agreement.
What Was the Lawsuit About?
Between 2003 and 2015, the U.S. military issued dual-ended Combat Arms earplugs manufactured by Aearo Technologies (a 3M subsidiary) to protect soldiers’ hearing in combat and training. The problem? The earplugs were allegedly too short to create a proper seal—leading to hearing damage, tinnitus, and long-term loss for many.
How Big Is This Settlement?
This lawsuit evolved into the largest mass tort in U.S. history, with over 230,000 plaintiffs. In August 2023, 3M agreed to pay $6.01 billion between 2023 and 2029. Roughly $1 billion will be paid in 3M stock, with the rest in cash. While the company denies liability, this settlement offers long-awaited relief for many affected veterans.
Scams After the Settlement
Unfortunately, the large payout also attracted scammers. Veterans have been targeted by fake callers claiming to represent the settlement administrator and asking for sensitive personal details. Remember: no one from the real settlement team will ever ask for your full Social Security number.
Where Things Stand Now
As of April 2025, the case is nearly closed with only 41 active lawsuits remaining. Veterans who qualify should stay alert to official notices and updates.
